Special education licensure

If you are interested in earning a special education teaching endorsement, but don't want to earn a full master's degree, the Special Education Certificate is right for you. Iowa State's School of Education offers the courses needed to earn Iowa's Instructional Strategist II: Behavior Disorders/Learning Disabilities, ages 5-21.

(This certificate is not accepting applications for 2024 at this time.)

Learning Goals

The Ph.D. principally prepares students to pursue faculty positions in colleges and universities and positions as educational researchers in a variety of public institutions and private organizations, such as state educational agencies and special education research centers. Some graduates who have extensive classroom experience work in school, district and state curriculum leadership positions.

The Instructional Design Graduate Certificate provides a unique opportunity for you to gain formal recognition by becoming part of a nationally recognized Curriculum and Instructional Technology (CIT) Program. The CIT Graduate Program is supported by the internationally known Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching and is part of the Educator Preparation Program.

This graduate certificate is primarily designed for those working in education, training, professional development, design, and/or outreach who wish to accredit and enhance their knowledge and skills. All credits earned toward the Instructional Design Certificate are Iowa State University graduate credits and can be earned before, after, or concurrently with a master or doctoral degree.

The graduate certificate in Education for Social Justice affords students (and non-degree seeking community members) an opportunity to engage in thoughtful, rigorous, and sustained inquiry into social justice struggles in P-20 classrooms, schools, and educational systems.
Grad design

The certificate also affords participants an opportunity to inquire into the complex relationships between P-20 schooling and broader cultural, economic, political, and social structures, policies, and practices. The certificate offers a range of topical and methodological vantage points to study social justice and education.

Advance your expertise in mathematics teaching and learning with Iowa State University's Mathematics Education graduate program. Our program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare educators for leadership roles in mathematics education research, curriculum development, and teaching.

If you have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or closely related field and want to teach math to students in grades 5-12, our Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Mathematics Education with a recommendation for mathematics licensure is just for you. In this program, you can become a licensed teacher in 12 months, as well as obtain a master’s degree, through our accelerated program. If you already hold a teaching endorsement/certification, you are not eligible for the MAT program. If you already hold teacher certification, please explore our M.Ed./M.S. programs instead of the MAT Program.
