If you are interested in pursuing secondary education (teaching in a middle school or high school) or K-12 education, you will need to choose a major in your area of interest and enroll in the college where your major is located. Our secondary education program prepares students to teach at the middle and high school levels by encouraging you to become an expert in your subject matter by majoring in that subject.

If you have a bachelor’s degree in science or a closely related field and want to teach science to students in grades 5-12, then you’ll want to join our science education graduate program. The Iowa State University School of Education offers a M.A.T. in science education through our Educator Preparation Program for individuals already possessing an undergraduate science degree. This program leads to licensure recommendation.

Learning Goals

  • Demonstrate their mastery of pedagogical knowledge by achieving a passing score on the Praxis subject area assessment and the PPAT
  • Demonstrate their mastery of specialized content knowledge in their certification area by achieving a GPA for their specialized education courses that meets or exceeds the state minimum required for teacher certification.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory teaching competence by earning a passing grade in student teaching.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to ethical guidelines and standards in all aspects of their professional work.

Advance your expertise in mathematics teaching and learning with Iowa State University's Mathematics Education graduate program. Our program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare educators for leadership roles in mathematics education research, curriculum development, and teaching.

If you have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or closely related field and want to teach math to students in grades 5-12, our Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Mathematics Education with a recommendation for mathematics licensure is just for you. In this program, you can become a licensed teacher in 12 months, as well as obtain a master’s degree, through our accelerated program. If you already hold a teaching endorsement/certification, you are not eligible for the MAT program. If you already hold teacher certification, please explore our M.Ed./M.S. programs instead of the MAT Program.
