Want to get hands-on experience with design building and digital fabrication? Want to prepare for a career while traveling abroad and working directly with industries across the globe? Want to make an impact through socially responsible and environmentally sensitive design? If your answer is yes, then you’ll find the perfect fit with our Department of Architecture.

In the Department of Architecture, we believe that the study of architecture involves questioning assumptions, reflecting on history, and rethinking the future so as to meaningfully contribute to the creation of just and equitable societies. That’s why we are committed to the design studio as a space in which conceptual, practical, and theoretical thinking is integrated with the everyday, the material, the technological, and the humane.

The nationally ranked Department of Architecture at Iowa State University provides two graduate degrees in architecture:

1. Master of Architecture: NAAB accredited professional architecture degree providing the foundation for licensure in the United States. This STEM-designated 90 credit degree does not require an undergraduate degree in architecture but can be accelerated for those holding a Bachelor of Architecture.

2. Master of Science in Architecture: a 30 credit research degree for those with prior knowledge or experience in the field of architecture. Thesis required.

Degrees Offered:

  • Master of Archiecture (M.Arch.)
  • Master of Science (M.S.)

How long does it take to earn a degree?

  • Median time to earn the master’s: 2.8 years (Methods)
Program Degrees Offered

Learning Goals

  • Comprehensive design skills in the field of architecture based on ethical responsibilities to clients, the wider society, and the physical environment.
  • Understanding of diverse cultural and social contexts and translation of this knowledge into design of built environments that support and include people of various backgrounds, resources, and abilities.
  • Understanding of the role of the built environment in human health, safety, and welfare at multiple scales, and application of this knowledge in architectural design.
  • Ecological knowledge and responsibility in respect of the agency and impact of design in conditions of climate crisis.
  • Knowledge of the established and emerging systems, technologies, and assemblies of building construction, and the criteria architects use to assess those technologies against the design and performance objectives of projects.
  • Develop research questions and respond to them with appropriate methods.
  • Knowledge of the histories and theories of architecture, landscape and urbanism, and how these are related to social, cultural, economic, environmental and political contexts.
  • Ability to make design decisions within an architectural project while demonstrating broad integration and consideration of building envelope systems and assemblies, structural systems, environmental control systems and life safety systems.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory contexts and codes relevant to architectural practice in the United States.
  • The path to becoming a licensed architect in the United States, the range of career opportunities available, and how the graduate program prepares for professional practice.

The graduate major in animal science offers students the option of pursuing MS- and PhD-level study with a broader focus than the department's other majors. Students in this major take courses in the five main sub-fields of animal science: breeding, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, and meat science, while focusing on one species of domestic animals.  Animal science majors frequently focus on research problems related to livestock production systems.

Over the past five years, the vast majority of graduates from this major have taken jobs in agricultural industries and agribusiness, while the balance have pursued additional degree work or assumed appointments in extension services around the country.

Degrees Offered:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
  • Master of Science (M.S.)

How long does it take to earn a degree?

  • Median time to earn the doctorate: 3.6 years (Methods)
  • Median time to earn the master’s: 2.1 years (Methods)

Learning Goals

  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of scholarly literature in Animal Sciences and related disciplines.
  • Form testable hypotheses and articulate research objectives that, when met, will lead to significant contributions to Animal Sciences and related disciplines.
  • Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research via appropriate acquisition, analysis, and reporting of data and information.
  • Interpret research results appropriately, integrating them into the existing knowledge in the discipline.
  • Clearly and accurately communicate research findings using written, oral, visual, and electronic means of communication.

Graduate studies in the Animal Physiology Program cover a broad range of physiological systems. Students may choose to major in general Animal Physiology, or to supplement their major with a formal specialization in various areas such as: reproductive physiology, muscle biology, and animal ethology. Study in reproductive physiology concentrates on improving the reproductive performance of pigs, cattle, sheep, and horses. The area of muscle biology focuses on the fundamental properties of muscle proteins and their roles in developing muscles and yielding muscle products. Research conducted in the ethology program aims to provide scientific answers to farm animal behavior and welfare in conventional and alternative production systems. Areas of interest for which formal specializations do not exist, may include neuroendocrinology, immunobiology, and perinatal development.

Research in the area of Animal Physiology utilizes state-of-the-art techniques in biochemistry, molecular biology, and light and electron microscopy in laboratories housed in Kildee Hall and the Molecular Biology Building. In addition to top quality laboratories, these buildings house animal rooms, surgery facilities, and analytical support labs. The research program in Animal Physiology is supported by access to the research herds located on the Department's outlying farms.

Examples of research of note conducted by physiology faculty and graduate students includes:

  • discovery of a new mechanism by which endocrine cells release hormones
  • discovery of key cytoskeletal proteins: actin, desmin, paranemin, synemin, talin, and vinculin
  • development of a synthetic skin that is applied to the teats of dairy cattle to prevent mastitis

Degrees Offered:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
  • Master of Science (M.S.)

The Department’s current Animal Breeding and Genetics group has built on this legacy of excellence and is widely recognized as one of the premier programs nationally and internationally. Recent advances in genomics and the increased utilization of genomics and other big data technologies that require advanced quantitative methods of analysis in other disciplines of the animal and biological sciences have further increased the importance of animal breeding and genetics.

Iowa State University has a proud history of nine decades of innovative animal genetics and genomics research, education and outreach, which traces back to the pioneering days of Lush and Hazel. Many of today’s animal breeders around the world can trace their academic pedigree back to Iowa State University (see pedigree link).
