The Graduate Certificate in Responsible AI is a 13-credit program designed for AI practitioners, graduate students, and professionals who want advanced training in building, evaluating, and deploying AI systems responsibly. The certificate focuses on risk quantification and risk mitigation across the AI lifecycle, including issues such as bias, opacity, uncertainty, and trust in AI-driven decisions. It is especially well suited for students who want a focused credential in responsible AI without committing to a full minor, as well as students from engineering, statistics, mathematics, bioinformatics, and other disciplines who want to apply AI responsibly in their own fields. The certificate can be taken primarily online or in person to support industry learners and working professionals.

Admission Requirements

Graduate College Requirements:

  • 4 year Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
  • Academic Records/Transcripts
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (Program may alter requirement.)
  • Proof of English Proficiency.

Program Specific Requirements:

SUPPLEMENTARY DOCUMENTS: This program does NOT require any supplementary material. Applicants have the option to upload supplemental documents, such as published research papers.

APPLICATION FEE WAIVERS: The Computer Science Department does not offer waivers for the final application fee.

TWO PHASE APPLICATIONS (For Fall 2026 onward): The pre-application is free on the computer science department certificate website and only requires unofficial transcripts and SOP. It is OPTIONAL to submit GRE and English proficiency test results. The Computer Science Graduate Admissions Committee will evaluate your pre-application and let you know if you are admissible. If approved, you will be invited to continue your application for the final admission decision.

ONE PHASE APPLICATION (Fall 2026 and later): Applicants will submit their application documents in one phase through the graduate college website directly.
