Required McNair Seminar Classes for Participants

During the two years of active participation in the program each scholar is required to register for a 1-credit hour University Studies course each semester specifically designed for McNair scholars. Each course covers different stages of the research process beginning with writing the research proposal and ending with the writing of the final report. In addition, each course prepares scholars for the application and admission process to graduate school that includes everything from writing a strong personal statement to securing funding. The courses are:

First Year Scholars

  • Fall semester—University Studies 301X: Introduction to the McNair Program & Introduction to Research
  • Spring semester—University Studies 302X: The Review of Literature and Methodology

Second Year Scholars

  • Fall semester—University Studies 401X: Data Collection and Analyses
  • Spring semester—University Studies 402X: Findings, Conclusions, and the Writing of the Final Report

Each course meets weekly for two hours and will have a course syllabus with required assignments, deadlines, scheduled cultural activities, and group travel activities.
