George Washington Carver Doctoral Fellowship

The George Washington Carver Doctoral Fellowship Program is named to honor George Washington Carver, Iowa State’s first minority student and faculty member. The fellowship is designed to assist in the national effort to increase the number of Ph.D. degrees earned by underrepresented students across all areas of graduate study. It offers to graduate students the opportunity to devote full time to preparation as researchers with specific guidance from the designated major professor. It is among the university’s most prestigious awards offered to graduate students.

Eligibility

You must be an underrepresented student (African American, American Indian, or Latino), a U.S. citizen, admitted as full into a Ph.D. program as a new student, and nominated by that program of study. Departments/Programs determine who should receive the award. Students do not apply.

Conditions of Fellowship

  • The fellowship takes the form of a 1/2 time (20 hours per week) appointment.
  • The length of the fellowship is for three (3) years from the beginning term. If degree requirements are not met after the third year, a regular departmental graduate assistantship will take the place of the fellowship.
  • Changing to another program of study or academic probation will terminate the fellowship.

Stipend

The annual stipend for the fellowship is $25,000 (fiscal year appointment) split evenly with the academic program.

Tuition

Tuition is covered as per the Graduate College Guidelines for Ph.D. students..
