Iowa is a Midwestern state located between the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers, west of Illinois and east of Nebraska. We are a state of culture and agriculture, blessed with fertile soil and a gently rolling terrain dotted with cities and towns of all sizes. And we are a state whose people come from many different backgrounds, folks who are proud of their traditions of fairness, opportunity, and inclusiveness. Iowa is home to three state Regent institutions of higher learning, each providing a first-rate education to students from all backgrounds and each with a history of support for diversity.
Iowa State University is a public land-grant institution serving Iowa, the nation, and the world through programs of instruction, research, and extension. The university, with an enrollment of over 25,000, is located in Ames, Iowa, a medium-sized town of 50,000. Ames has all the entertainment opportunities offered by a major university along with the parks, bike paths, and easy living offered by a smaller city. Iowa State University is proud to count George Washington Carver among its most distinguished alumni. In 1891, Carver became the first African American to enroll at Iowa State, receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees there and serving several years on the faculty before joining the faculty of the Tuskegee Institute.
The University of Iowa is a university of approximately 28,000 students. It has graduate programs in most research areas as well as first-rate professional schools of law, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy. The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a picturesque, cultured, and multicultural city of 60,000 on the banks of the Iowa River whose daily life reflects the virtues of the state as described above. The University of Iowa was the first U.S. public university to admit women and men on an equal basis (1855). In 1873, Mary B. Hickley received a law degree from the University of Iowa, becoming the first woman to earn a law degree from a U.S. law school. Alexander Clark, as the first African American to earn a law degree from a U.S. law school, received his University of Iowa law degree in 1879.
The University of Northern Iowa is a comprehensive university of approximately 13,000 students. It offers doctoral programs in education and industrial technology and master's programs in selected disciplines, including mathematics, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, science education, and biology. The University of Northern Iowa is located in Cedar Falls, part of a small metropolitan area of 100,000 located in northeast Iowa. The University of Northern Iowa has been the leader in a Minorities in Teaching program encouraging minorities from a number of Iowa cities to pursue careers in teaching. The University of Northern Iowa was awarded a Patricia Roberts Harris grant in 1999. Several faculty members from Dillard University and Southern University-New Orleans have taught in University of Northern Iowa summer programs.
